We have a WINNER!!!!
Congratulations to melissaa@bledsoe.net for winning the BlackBerry Holler Giveaway!!! She will receive 5 samples of our Goat Milk soap and 2 full size lip balms in her choice of flavors.
Make sure and join the survey to the right of the screen.. If we can get 25 votes.. I will have another give away!!! So spread the word and stay posted!!!
This is also the time when we renew our yard with fresh baby chickens.. Because they don't have a coup (We let them free range), we don't see many eggs, but you can always tell when you have several hens setting because they disappear for days at a time, before disappearing altogether and then suddenly appearing with a gaggle of colorful little ones.
I hope that everyone else is having much better luck than we are here on the farm. It seems that no matter how hard we try, we end up losing those animals that are most precious to us. This week it was our baby pig, and one of our baby goats, and then yesterday with no warning our Saanen nanny disappeared, only to be found with the end stages of pneumonia. One thing I have learned in my three years of goat keeping is that goats are much more susceptible to human disease and germs than any other animal. You do not know when a goat is sick until most of the time, it is too late. This was the case with PollyAnna.

In like a lion, out like a lamb.....
March sure started with a bang here, we had over an inch of snow last week and the misfortune to lose several of our animals to pneumonia, despite them having all their immunizations. They say if March comes in like that, then Spring will be gentle and mild. I sure hope so, we are ready to get our garden started. All our seeds are bought and ready to go to ground as soon as everything is dry enough...This is also the time when we renew our yard with fresh baby chickens.. It's Snowing!!!
Morning everyone... I woke up to a beautiful, if not cold, white blanket of snow here on the farm. Which here in Tennessee means: no school for the kiddos. We have these days quite often, so the school system allows so many "snow days" a year. The kids are enjoying a morning watching cartoons and the occasional snowball as they spend their maximum 5 minutes outside before they freeze out and come in begging for cocoa.
Outside the girls are doing good, Nema has been milked, since she lost her little one yesterday we will start milking her twice a day. My family is not a big fan of drinking the milk, but that is okay because if they drank it I wouldn't have enough for cheese and soap... :)
Rainy is enjoying the snow furls as she kicks and butts her way around the herd.. I am pretty sure she is the boss, she sure acts like it. We are so proud to have at least one happy and healthy baby on the farm!
Don't forget to join in the giveaway!! We are giving away a sampler set of our soaps and 2 full size lip balms in your choice of flavors... All you need to do to enter the drawing is add a comment to the box with you name and email address. one lucky winner will be drawn at random on Saturday March 9, 2013. Thanks for checking us out and spread the word!!!

The Pitfalls of farm life.....
Today has been one of those days.. One of those days where you wish that you had decided to be a secretary or a dentist or a hairstylist..... Anything but a farmer!!!
I woke to heavy rainstorms and cranky kids.. thankfully my husband takes care of the kids in the mornings, because I don't think I could have handled it this particular morning.. Hours later I woke to check on the girls, only to find that our new piggy (the one our daughter just got for her 9th birthday last week), was very sick in her pen. Hubby says it is heart worms and when we wormed her, it made her sick.... and there is no cure.. It is a very sad day.
At the same time, I checked all the girls to realize that our youngest baby goat had the scours. I doctored her and momma up with some microbs, then went to town for some medicated feed for the rest of the girls. As it was raining when we left all the girls chose to co-habitate in the same stall. I am sad to say that while we were gone, baby goat was smashed up against the wall and in her weakened state could not overcome the indiscretion. She died while we were gone. It is times like these that make me regret my decision to become a farmer. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!!

Welcome to BlackBerry Holler
Hello Everyone, this is my first post on my new blog. I would like to keep everyone informed about the changes that are going on here on BlackBerry Holler Goat Farm.
It is kidding season, and so far has been pretty uneventful. We have welcomed two new baby girls to the farm. The first was born to Maggie on Feb 8, 2013. We named her Rainy as she was born in the middle of a rainstorm
The second was born to Nema on Feb. 20, 2013.
We named her Stormy as she was born during a huge thunderstorm.
We only have 8 does on the farm right now and are unsure of how many of the remaining are bred. So we will know when they kid. If not we hope for a spring breeding so that we have winter milk.
